"Kana is a free Java MIDlet that helps you to learn the 70+ Japanese Hiragana characters and converts strings in Latin script to Hiragana. It should run on practically every Java-enabled mobile phone (with only MIDP 1.0, CLDC 1.0 as requirements).
If you can only install Java MIDlets "over the air" (OTA) on your phone, point the WAP browser on your phone to the following litte WAP page which has a link to the "jad" file:
After you select that link the phone fetches the "jar" which contains the MIDlet and installs it. Please note: The program is freeware and does not cost anything, but you will almost certainly have to pay your network operator for the download."

"FOKS stands for Forgiving Online Kanji Search.
FOKS is an intelligent dictionary interface that allows users more freedom in searching for dictionary entries than is the case with conventional dictionary interfaces. Besides the usual methods of searching by entering the reading or pasting the kanji string you can specify further options that make it easier to find the word you are looking for.
Most notable difference from the conventional dictionaries is the intelligent search which allows for lookup of dictionary entries even with the (predictably) incorrect reading.
All the dictionaries used in this interface are freely available from the home of the EDICT dictionary project at the Monash University."
|
|
"Keitai (Cellular) Phone Interface
Recently we have implemented interface to FOKS accessible from keitai phones. As of 08 Nov. 2002 these interfaces can also handle wild character searches(see above). Only phones able to display and input Japanese characters can be used. Currently we should be able to handle phones using one of the: EZWEB (WAP), I-mode or J-Sky access methods.
Following URLs can be used to access the respective interfaces:
- EZWEB http://www.foks.info/ez/
- I-mode http://www.foks.info/i/
- J-Sky http://www.foks.info/j/
- Other WAP devices http://www.foks.info/wap/"

Dictionaries
J-E Dictionary is a general Japanese-English Dictionary.
Name Dictionary contains place and personal names.
Search Method
Simple search method is based on direct match of input with dictionary entries. Intelligent search results in a listing of candidate dictionary entries that could plausibly be related to the input. It handles incorrect and partially correct readings, too. In a case of kanji input, the search is automatically defaulted to Simple search."

- Overview
The idea of KanjiQ is simply to test the player's kanji knowledge by presenting a series of kanji cards, where for each card the player must respond to indicate either recognition or non-recognition.
Cards which the player has recognised are discarded, but unrecognised are put back in the pack and will come up later.
The game ends when the player has recognised all the cards.
There are two types of card, Kanji Character Cards and Kanji Information Cards.
- Kanji Character Cards
Kanji Character cards show only the kanji itself, and all other information such as readings and meanings are hidden.
By pressing the numeric keys as indicated on-screen, the player can display the hidden fields and ascertain whether or not he correctly recognised the kanji.
- Kanji Information Cards
Kanji Information Cards are the opposite of Kanji Character Cards - the readings and meanings are displayed, and the player must try to work out what the kanji character is.
- Controls
A kanji card with all its information being displayed will be too large to display on the screen of most phones, so the player must use the phone's usual up/down keys to scroll around the information as required.
Display of individual fields on kanji cards are toggled using the keys 1-4.
Extra keys include the 5 key to reveal all of a card's currently-hidden fields, and * and # to register correct and incorrect, respectively.
- Drawing Kanji
Phones equipped with PDA-style styluses have an extra feature in KanjiQ where the player can practice drawing the kanji using the stylus.
On phones with a stylus, the option to draw a kanji will be present in the menu on the kanji card screen.
Note that KanjiQ cannot determine whether a kanji has been drawn correctly - the player has to decide that for themself!
